What Is the Codex Micro?

The device is manufactured by Work Louder, which previously created a co-branded macro pad for Figma in 2023. OpenAI provides the branding and the Codex software integration.
This Is Not the Jony Ive Device
It is important to distinguish the Codex Micro from OpenAI's much larger consumer hardware project. The company acquired Jony Ive's startup, io Products, for $6.5 billion in May 2025 and has been developing a screenless, voice-first AI device.
That project has faced repeated delays. Court filings now indicate the Jony Ive-designed product will not ship until at least early 2027, later than the original late-2026 target. It is expected to be a smart speaker with an integrated camera, priced between $200 and $300.
The Codex Micro is a low-risk, niche entry into hardware aimed at the developer community. The Jony Ive device is a mass-market consumer play. The two should not be confused.

For heavy Codex users, the Codex Micro offers a ready-to-use, integrated solution that works out of the box. No configuration, no open firmware flashing -- just plug in and map your commands.
