Roblox has rolled out its new age-based account system worldwide, including in India, introducing two new account categories designed for users under 16. Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts automatically sort users by age, applying stricter content filters, communication restrictions, and parental oversight tools that evolve as children grow.

What You Need to Know

  • Roblox Kids accounts (ages 5-8) have the strictest settings with chat disabled by default and access limited to Minimal and Mild-rated content only
  • Roblox Select accounts (ages 9-15) allow Moderate-rated content with graduated chat settings and additional safeguards
  • Users transition automatically from Kids to Select at age 9 and to standard accounts at 16
  • Facial age verification is now required before any user can access chat features
  • Parents gain expanded controls including game blocking, screen time limits, and spending caps

Two New Account Types

Roblox Kids accounts are designed for children aged 5 to 8 and come with the platform's strongest default protections. Chat is completely disabled. Access is limited to experiences carrying Minimal or Mild content maturity ratings. The game catalog available to Kids users is curated and tightly moderated, with enhanced review processes including developer verification and real-time content evaluation.

Roblox Select accounts serve users aged 9 to 15. These accounts grant access to a wider catalog including games rated up to Moderate content. Chat settings vary by age and region but remain restricted compared to standard accounts. Experiences involving sensitive issues, social hangouts, and free-form drawing features are excluded from Select catalogs.

Users move automatically through tiers. A Kid account becomes a Select account when the user turns 9, and a Select account converts to a standard Roblox account at age 16. Users aged 16 and above see no changes to their current experience.

Expanded Parental Controls

Parents who link their accounts to their children's profiles gain a suite of oversight tools. They can review friend lists, approve or decline friend requests, block or report users, set screen time limits, establish monthly spending caps, manage chat permissions, and block specific games. A new game approval feature allows parents to grant access to specific experiences outside their child's default settings.

These controls remain customizable until the child turns 16, after which account management shifts primarily to the user.

Safety and Communication Changes

Roblox says it is the first major online gaming platform to require facial age estimation for chat features. Users who have not completed age verification cannot access standard accounts or communication tools. Chat continues to block links, images, and videos. Users under 16 can no longer share or view social media links across profiles, game pages, Community pages, or the Creator Hub.

Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, said the new framework is designed to adapt alongside children as their needs change. Vineeta Garg, IT Head at SRDAV Public School and a member of Roblox's Global Parent Council, welcomed the changes as a meaningful step toward safer digital experiences for children.

What This Means for Indian Families

India is one of Roblox's largest markets, and the rollout here carries particular significance. The platform has faced scrutiny from parents and educators over safety concerns, and the new age-based system represents a concrete response. For Indian parents, the ability to set spending limits and screen time caps, monitor friend lists, and approve individual games provides practical tools for managing their child's gaming habits.

Bottom Line

Roblox's age-based account system is a significant upgrade to how the platform handles child safety. By tying account permissions to verified age rather than self-reported information, the company is raising the bar for online youth protection. For parents, the expanded controls offer real visibility into what their children are doing on the platform.
